Sr. Engineer - Thermal Analysis
|
Description:
This position requires excellent thermal analysis skills that will be applied in analyzing and solving thermal problems in the development and testing of flight propulsion products. The individual joins a senior staff engaged in development and production activities related to new and existing in-space propulsion technologies with a market leading propulsion supplier.
In this position, the selected candidate will perform thermal analysis used in defining the thermal management system for the in space propulsion products. The candidate will coordinate implementation of thermal solutions for in-space applications with the design engineers, structural analysts and manufacturing engineers in a multi-discipline project team.
The selected candidate will build and/or modify thermal models using general-purpose finite difference or finite element modeling software for predicting component and system level thermal behavior. The candidate will develop and evaluate solutions for thermal problems identified during the initial design stage. The analysis activities for flight propulsion components and systems will involve solving heat transfer problems that radiation, thermodynamics, fluid flow, and/or gas dynamics simulations.
In order to verify analytical models, the candidate individual will assist in the development of test procedures and hardware build, coordinate with test staff specifying test methods, instrumentation requirements, and monitoring the test. Once testing is complete, the thermal analyst will update the thermal analysis models based on test results and document the analysis results.
This position also requires the candidate to prepare and present a summary of the thermal analysis problem and results to staff and customers. The candidate will be responsible for preparing documentation for test reports, analysis reports and proposal technical sections.
This position requires the selected candidate to have excellent structural analysis skills that will be applied in designing and solving structural problems in the development and testing of flight propulsion products. The individual joins a senior staff engaged in development and production activities related to new and existing atmospheric and in-space propulsion technologies with a market leading propulsion supplier.
Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each) :
Under general direction, the selected candidate will perform engineering assignments requiring a wide application of advanced principles, theories and concepts in developing or modifying propulsion hardware for spacecraft and missile programs.
Specific details of the responsibilities include the following:
(80%) Perform structural analysis to verify the adequacy of designs to meet structural, thermal and performance requirements. Analyses include classical hand calculations and finite element models developed with vendor supplied software such as ANSYS or ABAQUS. Correlate analysis model and test results, update analysis models and provide assessment of design margins. Prepare technical reports documenting all analysis activities.
(10%) Support sub-component, component, sub-system and system testing through pretest predictions of operational behavior, real time test result assessment and post test data reduction and analysis.
(10%) Present status and results of analysis tasks and design verification at Independent Review Boards, Milestone Reviews, Peer Reviews, Preliminary Design Reviews, Critical Design Reviews and Technical Interchange Reviews.
Requirements :
This position requires a BS in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Mechanics and 5 years of engineering experience with an emphasis on structural analysis and dynamics testing. A MS or Ph.D. is desired. Demonstrated experience in conducting and performing linear, non-linear and dynamic structural analyses supporting design, development and production qualification of new or updated products is required. Requires proficiency using Finite Element Analysis tools such as ANSYS, NASTRAN or ABAQUS. Experience with NASGRO, Unigraphics NX, or Pro/E is a plus. Candidate should have demonstrated experience in developing and using sophisticated scientific and engineering techniques to conduct research and development of unique and difficult to define problems. Knowledge and experience with aerospace product development efforts is desired. Must have the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, scientific journals, technical procedures and government specifications.
Requires proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and Power Point).
